George R. Lund, Sr.

George R.
Lund, Sr., of Malden, formerly of Cambridge, passed away early
Tuesday morning, April 19, 2011, with his loving family at his
side, after a short illness. George was 87. He was born on
August 15, 1923 in Boston, the son of the late Evan B. & Alice
E. (McClary) Lund. He was raised in Cambridge and attended
Rindge Technical School in Cambridge.
In
February of 1943 he joined the U.S. Army and served three years
with the Headquarters Battery 112th Anti Aircraft
Artillery Gun Battalion. He served in North Africa, France and
Germany and took part in the invasion of Southern France and
Rhineland. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal,
and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign
Ribbon. George also served eleven years with the Air National
Guard in Massachusetts.
When
George returned home he would marry his sweetheart, Kathleen I.
Ward. The couple was married in Seabrook, New Hampshire and
settled in Cambridge. George and Kathleen started a family;
they had three sons and one daughter. In 1996 the family moved
to Malden and has resided here for the last fifteen years.
George & Kathleen shared 65 years together in marriage before
his passing.
George
returned from the war and worked for the family trucking
business as a truck driver for five years. He later worked for
the Adley Express Company of Cambridge for many years until his
retirement. He was a member of Teamsters Local #25, Charlestown.
He was a member of the Somerville American Legion Post #388. He
also served as president and coach of the Cambridge Pee Wee
Little League. He enjoyed gardening, reading and was considered
a history buff on the Civil War and WWII.
George is
survived by his loving wife Kathleen I. (Ward) Lund. He was the
devoted father of Ronald F. Lund & George R. Lund, Jr., both of
Malden, Michael J. Lund and his wife Janice Sette-Lund of
Cambridge, and Susan K. Lund of Malden and her late husband
Richard A. Fristensky. Loving Brother of Ethlyn Bleiler of
Watertown, Mildred MacLeod of Billerica, Dorothy Leslie of
Stoughton, Alice Richard of Duxbury, Nancy Lund of Billerica,
and the late Frederick Lund, formerly of Waltham. He was the
loving grandfather of James M. Lund of Cambridge and many loving
nieces & nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to
visiting hours in the Weir-Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home,
144 Salem St., Malden, Saturday evening, April 23,
2011, from 6-9 pm.
The family has requested that in lieu
of flowers contributions in George’s memory may be made to the
VNA Care Network & Hospice, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923.
