Robert
McKinley Mansfield, 82, a longtime resident of Malden, passed
away Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital
in Melrose, Massachusetts. He was born 1928 in Wakefield,
Massachusetts the son of the late George and Catherine
Mansfield. After high school, he enlisted in the US Navy to
help our countries fight in WWII. He saw action in the Pacific
Theatre aboard different vessels, most notably the USS Tarawa,
which had survived numerous kamikaze attacks. He was discharged
honorably in 1952. 1955, Bob married his sweetheart, Marylin
Eaton, and the two settled down in Malden to raise their
family. They shared over 55 years together until Marilyn’s
passing less than a year ago. After his return from the war,
he took employment as a truck driver for a short time before
entering into retail sales. He began selling electronics
including TVs and radios. He then took a sales position with
Kimballs Jewelers. He stayed in the jewelry industry for many
years, eventually taking a management position in the Jewelry
Building in Boston. Upon his retirement from the jewelry
business, Bob began working as a crossing guard for the City of
Malden. For many years he worked the corner of Ferry St. and
Eastern Avenue next to the Cheverus School. He continued this
until recent health concerns forced his retirement. Bob was a
founding member of Club 24 in Malden. He enjoyed playing games,
especially cribbage and pool. He was also very fond of horses,
and followed the racing circuit for years, becoming friends with
many horse owners and jockeys.
He is survived
by his son, Robin Mansfield of Antrim, NH, his daughter, Susan
Mills and husband Edward of Malden, MA, and his grandchildren,
Kristopher, Raymond and Kari Mansfield, C.J. Searle, and Sean
Mills, and his sister, Lorraine Meuse of Andover.
He was
preceded in death by his wife Marylin, his father George
Mansfield; his mother Catherine Mansfield, his brothers, George,
Frederick, and Stanley Mansfield, and his sister, Virginia
Sampson.

Visitation will be at Weir - MacCuish Funeral Home on Thursday,
Feb 3rd, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM
