Richard
Earl Owen, 77, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away on
Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Kindred Hospital- Boston
Northshore in Peabody, Massachusetts.
He was born in
March of 1934 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of Ralph E. and
Doris (Colebourne) Owen. Richard was raised in Lowell. He
enlisted in the US Navy right out of high school, and served
aboard a Destroyer during the Korean Conflict. He was
discharged honorably in 1955. He soon moved to the Malden area
where he settled down. He was a skilled carpenter and cabinet
maker, and worked for Giltberts in Avon, MA, where he made home
displays for stores. He retired from the company in 1995. In
November of 1975, Richard married Ruth E. Farrer, and the two
shared over 35 years together until his passing.
Richard was an
avid golfer, and he also enjoyed watching all of the local
sports teams. He enjoyed puttering in his workshop, and had the
skills to fix just about anything. He was a member of the
Saugus-Everett Elks, #642, and a Life Member of the Malden VFW
Post 639.
He is survived
by his wife Ruth, his children, Kathleen M. Owen, of Malden,
Theresa M. Owen of Malden, Robert F. Owen of Medford,
Richard M. Owen of Pembroke, Deborah A. Legros of Fitchburg,
John "Jack" Owen of Malden, James K. Owen of Malden, William
T. Owen of NY, and Joseph O. Ferguson of WA, his sister Doris
Frizzell of Lowell, as well as 14 grandchildren, and many
nieces and nephews.
Richard was
preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Doris Owen, and his
daughter Elaine B. Owen
Funeral
services will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral
Home, 144 Salem St, Malden on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 11AM,
with visitation held from 9AM to 11 AM at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
