Joseph Pierce


Raymond J. Pierce, of Boston, formerly of Malden, passed away on
Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston, he was 86. Ray was born on January 24, 1924 in
Middleboro, where he spent much of his childhood. He was the
son of the late Leon R. and Nina W. (Gallond) Pierce. Around
the age of 15, he and his family moved to Malden where he
graduated from Malden High School. Immediately after high
school, Ray enlisted in to the U.S. Army on April 12, 1943 to
help fight for our country during World War II. He saw action
in Okinawa as well as New Guinea during his service time. At
the end of the War, Ray was honorably discharged on February 11,
1946, having attained the rank of Technician Fourth Grade. Upon
his return, he took employment with Provident Savings Bank in
Boston, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring.
At this time, Ray began working in the State House in Boston
under Bob Crane. He even became part of the "Crane Singers."
Ray had a great love for acting as well. He lived in Hollywood
for many years, where he performed in some TV commercials and
over the years performed in many theater productions, most
notably as the lead role as Jesus Christ in "The Christus" for
four consecutive years. Ray was also featured in roles in many
plays including "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and "Our Town".
Raymond was also involved with many smaller theatre groups,
including the MIT Community Players and the Harvard Guild of
Theatre. Ray also spent many years starring at the Lennox Hotel
in Boston performing as their lead singer.
Aside from all his life accomplishments, Raymond was a very
positive person who loved people. He faithfully prayed to St.
Jude and, in his spare time, volunteered at the Pine Street
Inn.
Raymond is survived by his brothers, Robert W. Pierce and his
wife, Francien of Cotuit, and Leon R. Pierce, Jr. and his wife
Helen of Bloomfield, CT. He is also survived by many nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his
sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis Saunders and her husband
Warren and his brother and sister-in-law, Paul H. Pierce and his
wife, Eileen.
Visitation will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral
Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, MA on Wednesday, July 21, 2010
from 11 to 1 PM, immediately followed by a graveside service in
the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Fr. John Pierce, Raymond’s
cousin, will be presiding.
