Raymond Joseph Pierce

Raymond J. Pierce, of Boston, formerly of Malden, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010 in the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, he was 86.   Ray was born on January 24, 1924 in Middleboro, where he spent much of his childhood.  He was the son of the late Leon R. and Nina W. (Gallond) Pierce.  Around the age of 15, he and his family moved to Malden where he graduated from Malden High School.  Immediately after high school, Ray enlisted in to the U.S. Army on April 12, 1943 to help fight for our country during World War II.  He saw action in Okinawa as well as New Guinea during his service time.  At the end of the War, Ray was honorably discharged on February 11, 1946, having attained the rank of Technician Fourth Grade.  Upon his return, he took employment with Provident Savings Bank in Boston, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring.

At this time, Ray began working in the State House in Boston under Bob Crane.  He even became part of the "Crane Singers."  Ray had a great love for acting as well.  He lived in Hollywood for many years, where he performed in some TV commercials and over the years performed in many theater productions, most notably as the lead role as Jesus Christ in "The Christus" for four consecutive years.  Ray was also featured in roles in many plays including "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and "Our Town".  Raymond was also involved with many smaller theatre groups, including the MIT Community Players and the Harvard Guild of Theatre.  Ray also spent many years starring at the Lennox Hotel in Boston performing as their lead singer.

Aside from all his life accomplishments, Raymond was a very positive person who loved people.  He faithfully prayed to St. Jude and, in his spare time, volunteered at the Pine Street Inn.

Raymond is survived by his brothers, Robert W. Pierce and his wife, Francien of Cotuit, and Leon R. Pierce, Jr. and his wife Helen of Bloomfield, CT.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis Saunders and her husband Warren and his brother and sister-in-law, Paul H. Pierce and his wife, Eileen.

Visitation will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, MA on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 from 11 to 1 PM, immediately followed by a graveside service in the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.  Fr. John Pierce, Raymond’s cousin, will be presiding.
