Frederick Ward Scribner Jr.

Frederick W. Scribner, Jr., died August 5, 2008 at his home in Malden, he was 85.  Fred was born on May 7, 1923, the son of the late Frederick W Scribner, Sr. & Shirley E. Hollis. Fred was born in Boston and raised in Malden. He was educated in the Malden schools and attended Malden Trade School for three months. It was there that Fred started to hone his skill for later employment.  He was a graduate of Malden High School, Class of 1942.

After high school, Fred took employment with the Consolidated Machine Works Inc. in Malden, as a machinist, working with lathes and drill presses, reading blueprints and micrometers. In March of 1943, Fred joined the U.S. Army to help in the war effort during WW II.  He attended engineer basic training and later became a Radio Operator Low Speed.  Fred operated and maintained Signal Corps radio equipment using both code and voice apparatus. He received and sent International Morse Code at low speeds.  He operated radio- telephone equipment and also setup and maintained radio and telephone communication between various Army units in the field.  He served with the 295th Combat Engineer Battalion. Fred was discharged in December of 1945 as T/4 and was a Purple Heart recipient in WW II.

When he returned from the Army, Fred attended the North Bennett Industrial School in Boston. There he learned the craft of making fine furniture and cabinet making. This talent was put to work at home later making his son’s beds, hutch cabinets and other fine furniture for their home. One of his prized pieces still sits in his living room: an inlay glass coffee table he made for his loving wife Margaret.

On May 8, 1946, Fred and Margaret were married in the Forestdale Community Church. His close friend Bill Redford was best man in his wedding as well as Fred serving as best man in Bill’s wedding to Helen.  Fred and Margaret remained in Malden and raised their two sons.  They spent fifty-five years together until Margaret’s passing in April of 2001. Fred was a life long resident of Malden and had resided on Pierce Street for sixty years.

Fred was employed as a machinist with the former Lawson Tool & Die Manufacturing Company until its closing and later with the Palmer Manufacturing in Malden until his retirement.  In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, but most of his time was devoted to caring for his wife and mother. He did enjoy a fishing trip to Alaska with his son  at the age of 80. He was a longtime active member of the Forestdale Community Church and had served as deacon and trustee. Fred was always willing to help anyone out with all his talents.

He is survived by his sons, Frederick W. Scribner III and his wife Jean F. Scribner of Rowley, Lloyd L. Scribner and his wife Margaret Scribner of Hooksett, NH.  Fred was the cherished grandfather of Dawn  L. Roberts of Amherst, NH, Brian C. Scribner and his wife Kristin of Lincoln, RI.  He was the loving great-grandfather of Kayla N. & Jacob N. Roberts, Lillian H. & Jared W. Scribner.
