Edward
Francis Sherman, 85, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away
on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in
Medford, Massachusetts.
He was born
August, 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts the son of George and
Mary (Tobin) Sherman. Ed was raised and educated in Boston,
graduating from English High School with the class of 1943.
After high school, Ed enlisted in the US Marines to help our
countries fight in WWII. He served in the pacific theatre where
he saw action and in China where he helped build a school for
children. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to the Boston
area. Ed married his sweetheart, Ellen E. Foster, in 1948 in
Boston. They moved to Indiana for a time while Ed attended
Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana. He received his degree in
Electrical Engineering, and they returned to the Boston area
where Ed went to work for the MBTA in the power department. He
retired as a supervisor for the MBTA, and continued to work as a
consultant. Part of this consultant work brought him to Kuwait
where he worked for 11 months. Even in this religiously
repressive environment, Ed was able to find other Catholics that
he was able to regularly celebrate Mass with. For many years Ed
volunteered at the Bread of Life assisting with their dinners.
He helped them with the preparation and clean up from the meals
they provided. He also volunteered for 7 years for the Mystic
Valley Elder Services as a Shine Counselor. Ed was also an
active member of the American Legion of Malden and the Malden
Elks. The most important things for Ed in his life was his
family and his religion.
He is survived
by his wife Ellen E. (Foster) his children, Kevin J. Sherman of
Malden, Celeste B. Van Gilder of Weare, NH, Brian J. Sherman of
Derry, NH, and Marie Golab of Methuen, MA., his grandchildren,
Kevin Sherman Jr, Anthony Sherman, Tara Sherman, Patrick
Sherman, Ashley Golab, Mathew Golab, and Kathrine DiMascolo, and
his grandchildren, Kayla, Sasha, Brinley, and Joshua.
Ed was
preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Sherman;
his brother George Sherman, his granddaughter, Andrea Van
Gilder, and his son in law, David Van Gilder.
Funeral
services will be held Wednesday, June 8th, at 10:00
AM in Sacred Hearts Church, 297 Main Street, Malden. Burial
will be follow in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
