Carl F. Stead

Carl F Stead,  95, a longtime resident of Malden, died Thursday, July 31, 2008  in Waltham, surrounded by the loving comfort of his family.  Carl was born and raised in Malden.  He completed most of his education in Malden, before his family moved to Medford in his final year of high school. He completed his education and graduated from Medford High School with the class of 1931.  It was there he met his sweetheart, Bina R. Padula.  The two were married in 1935 in St. Francis of Assisi in Medford. They soon moved to Malden where they raised their four children. The couple shared over 50 years together until Bina's passing in 1987.  Once WWII broke out, Carl was unable to enlist because of his family obligations, but still served the war effort stateside by working as a volunteer air raid warden.   He eventually took employment at the MBTA as a bus driver.  He drove a bus for nearly 40 years until retiring in 1978.   Carl was a member of the  Carmen's Union, Local 589.  He also was a sort of a "tinkerer" who enjoyed being able to do almost anything himself, whether it was removing rock to create a driveway, or helping a neighbor fix their car, there was nothing he couldn’t try and fix.  He also enjoyed finding bargains and treasures at yard sales, but his greatest source of pleasure was spending time with his family.

He is survived by his children,  Robert C. and wife Dorothy L. Stead  of Malden, David P. Stead and fiancé Diane Sullivan of Melrose, Jeanne S.  Lane and dear friend William D. Cummings of Waltham, and Donald E.and wife Lynn M.  Stead  of Stoneham, his sister, Marion Babcock  of Hopedale, as well as 13 grandchilden, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bina R. (Padula),  his parents,  John W.  and Hildur E. (Johnson) Stead,   his siblings, Viola, Edwin, John Jr, and Mildred Johnson, and his grandchildren Mark and Glen.

Contributions in Carl's memory may be made to the Glen Mastrangelo Scholarship Fund, c/o Jeanne Lane 28 Emmeline Ave.  Waltham, MA,  02452.
