Cathleen Murphy Obituary

Cathleen “Pat” (Kearney) Murphy, a lifelong resident of Medford, passed away on Monday, April 22, at the age of 91. She was born in 1932, the daughter of Thomas and Bridie Kearney. She attended Cambridge Matignon High School and was among the school’s first graduating class in 1950. She went on to have a successful career with the phone company as one of only a couple women working in a technical capacity within the maintenance department at that time. While she would not take such credit, she was a ground breaker leading the way for other women who came after her working in a technical capacity at the phone company.

She married her sweetheart, Cornelius “Connie” Murphy, and the two settled down becoming part of the Medford community. They shared 47 wonderful years together until Connie’s recent passing in January. They were inseparable in life and now reunited in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Pat was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joseph Church in Medford. She was very active in volunteer activities within the church as well as various community organizations. In recognition of her community service, Pat was presented with a key to the City of Medford by Mayor Michael McGlynn in 2015. Pat was a proud member of the Elks Lodge of Medford & Malden, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Pat was a first generation American, with her parents coming here from Ireland. She took great pride in her Irish heritage. Pat always spoke fondly of her travels to Ireland and enjoyed keeping in touch with her Irish relatives.

Pat lost her father when she was only 9 years old. She had great respect for mother who raised 5 kids on her own. Pat like her mother was a strong and independent woman who enjoyed sports and a bit of competition. She was an avid league bowler, a passion she shared with her mother and sister. She was also a dedicated Red Sox fan. She and Connie loved attending games at Fenway and would travel to Pawtucket and Lowell to watch minor league games.

In addition to her husband Cornelius, Pat was preceded in death by her siblings Julia Kearney, Timothy Kearney, Thomas Kearney, and James Kearney. Pat had no children of her own but she is survived by her nephews Thomas Kearney, Albert Kearney and Kevin Kearney and their children.

Funeral services will be held from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 7th, with visitation from 10:00 to 11 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church, 114 High St, Medford, at 11:30. Interment to follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
