Eleanor J. Roach, “Ellie”, a loving and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on December 25th in her home with her husband by her side. Eleanor was born in Malden in 1939, the daughter of Ercole and Grace Pagliccia. She was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1957. She married her sweetheart “Frannie” late in ‘57 and the two settled down to raise their family. Once the children were raised Ellie worked as a real estate broker for a short time. She then took full-time employment with H&R Block as a Tax Preparer and retired from that company after 33 years. She loved her career there and all her clients loved her!
She was a longtime member of the Maplewood Baptist Church in Malden and after the family moved to Boxford she became an active member of the First Congregational Church of Boxford. She enjoyed cooking, tennis, and skiing, and loved spending time with family and friends. She was a great cook and made delicious homemade dinners, desserts, school lunches, and great Italian food. She also made special cakes for holidays and birthdays. Ellie was a fierce competitor and very athletic. She and Frannie skied all over the world and they played team tennis for many years with many dear friends. Ellie was on the tennis court into her early 80s and could outrun anyone. She also played years of pick-up tennis in the mornings at Amerige Park in Malden in the women's circuit. She had lots of tennis friends and everyone gravitated toward her beautiful smile, friendliness and great humor. Her inner and outward beauty and loving and fun personality were recognized when she was selected ‘Queen of the Golden Tornados' at her Malden High School Homecoming in 1957.
She was also an enthusiastic and energetic majorette for Malden High School, later teaching her daughters to twirl the baton almost as well as she did.
She is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 66 years, Francis G. Roach; her son Donald Roach and his wife Elizabethanne of Boxford; her daughters Janet Roach Enegren and her husband Lawrence of Malden, Jean Card of North Andover, and Julie Silva of Garden City, NY. Her siblings Mary DeLuca of Everett, Theresa Chiulli of Stoneham, Doris (Dolly) Johnson of Burlington, and Anthony Pagliccia and wife Sharon of New Ipswich, NH; her grandchildren, Michael, Daniel, Andrew and his wife Julie, and Christopher, and her great granddaughter, Emma. She is also pre-deceased by her sister Jeanette Coombs of Wakefield.
