James Henry "Jim" Black, 91, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away on December 14, 2011 at the Life Care Center of Stoneham in Stoneham, Massachusetts.

He was born May 13, 1920 in Nashville, Tennessee the son of and Mary (Ellsbury) . Jim was raised and educated in Nashville. He enlisted in US Navy in 1938, and served on several different vessels as a cook until 1945, when he was discharged honorably. In 1941, he and his sweetheart, Florence Springer, were married in Cambridge, Ma. The two then settled down in Malden to raise their family. Jim took a position with the Converse Rubber Company in Malden, and worked there until 1969. Soon after his retirement Converse, he took at position with the Malden Housing authority in the maintenance department, where he worked until he fully retired.

Jim was a long time active member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Malden, where he served many rolls including singing with the men's choir. He was also a member of the Lions Club of Malden, and the VFW Post 639 of Malden. In years past he was active with the Boy Scouts and was a Scout Master. He also used to play a lot of softball. In addition, throughout his life he was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife Florence, Pamela V. Hooks (daughter) of Malden, MA, and James H. Black (son) of Dorchester, MA, his sister, Alberta Crawford from Nashville, TN, his grandchildren, Dianne G. Pierce, Kenee' A. Ward, Tanya J. Black, Thomas J. Hooks, and James A . Hooks, his great grandchildren, Shante, Cory, Terrence, Breanna, Craig, Ariana, Jasmine, and Kyanna, and his great-grandchildren, Cory Jr, Sariya, and Thomas.

Jim was preceded in death by his Parents, Allen and Mary Black, and 8 of his siblings.

Visitation will be held at the Emanuel Baptist Church, 20 Hillside Avenue in Malden on Tuesday, December 20th, from 4:00-7:00PM, with funeral services beginning immediately at 7:00 PM. Procession will form at the Church on Wed, Dec 21st, at 10:30AM for interment in Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Lake Street, Peabody.
