Janice Louise Burns
Janice L. (DeLucca) Burns of Nahant, formerly of Malden and South Dennis, passed away at her home peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2012 surrounded by her family. She was 76. Born in Saugus on May 16, 1935, Janice was the daughter of the late Louis and Mildred (Page) DeLucca. Janice was raised and educated in Malden. She was a graduate of Malden High School - Class of 1953. After high school, Janice attended and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in 1955. In 1959, Janice married William J. (Bill) Burns. They were happily married for over 52 years, raising and caring for their family, until Bill's passing in July of 2011.
Early in her career, Janice went to work for a prominent law firm in Boston before taking a brief respite to care for her growing family. In the early 1970's, she went back to work for the McFadden Manor Nursing Home as the facility's activities director. Following that, Janice worked for the City of Malden under the Title 9 Program before becoming the executive assistant for former Mayor Ed Lucey during his term in office from 1992 to 1996. Janice finished her employment with the city in the Malden Housing Authority before her retirement in 1998.
Janice and Bill retired to South Dennis where they made many friends. They absolutely enjoyed their years on the Cape. Janice loved to bowl and belonged to one of the Cape's many bowling leagues. She was also a member of a garden club and loved to grow hydrangeas. Janice was also an active Mahjong player. She was a past member and served at one point as the secretary to the Zonta Club. Janice and Bill loved to travel and enjoyed many beautiful destinations - Italy, Ireland, and Alaska to name a few. They were also heavily involved in all of their grandchildren's events. Football, baseball, hockey, basketball, karate, dancing, and cheerleading...Janice and Bill were their biggest supporters. Just last year, Janice was awarded the MVP trophy for being the biggest and best team supporter for her grandson's Bay State Baseball Team. Janice truly enjoyed the time she spent with her wonderful family and friends at her home in South Dennis.
Janice is survived by her children, Kathy Burns and her husband, John Condon of Nahant, Kevin Burns and his wife, Linda (Baccari) of Norwell, and Jim Burns and his wife, Carrie (McGeough) of Reading as well as her grandchildren - Christina, Billy, Peter, Mason, and Will. She also leaves many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be in the Weir-MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, on Monday, February 13, 2012 from 4 to 8 PM.
