Jean (Bains) Gottschalk, a loving housewife and mother, passed away on Sunday, April 11th. Jean was born in Louisiana in 1925, the daughter of Albert and Pauline Baines. After high School, she attended Louisiana Tech College, where she received her Bachelors in Liberal Arts. She continued on to earn her Masters Degree from the State University of Iowa. Jean then enlisted in the US Navy, and served honorably during the Korean War. Her enlistment brought her to Boston, where she met Albert Gottschalk. The two married in 1953, and settled down in Malden to raise their family. They shared over 40 years of marriage together until Albert's passing in 1995. The past few years Jean had been residing at the Ashland Farm Senior Living Center in North Andover, having lived in Beverly and Boxford since shortly after Albert's passing. Over the years Jean had worked in the Children's Room at the Malden Public Library, and had also worked at the First Baptist Church in Malden. In the past she active member of the Maplewood Baptist Church, before attending the First Baptist Church in Malden. There she was active with the women's groups in the church, and involved with many of their special programs. She was a past member of the Council of Churches, a member of the Tri-City Board of Mental Retardation. In her spare time she volunteered to read at nursing homes, and enjoyed spending time with her beloved cat.
She is survived by her children, Nancy L. Kittleson and husband Eric of Edmunds, WA, Judy A. Johnson of Brimfield, Janet L. Merriman and Husband Michael of Merrimack, and Walter E. Gottschalk of N. Andover, Her brother, Robert B. Bains of TX, her grandchildren, Erika, Nicholas, Jessica, Carl, and Christopher and great grandchild Madison.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Albert.
Funeral services will be held graveside at the Forest Dale Cemetery, 150 Forest St, Malden, on Thurs, April 15, at 11 AM.
