John B. Nelson, 88, a retired manager for the mechanic's garage at the U.S. Post Office, where he worked for over 30 years, died Saturday, November 19th, 2011 at the Veterans Home in Mexico, Missouri.
John was born January 1, 1923 in Salem, Missouri the son of John and Tilda (Eggan) Nelson. He was raised in St. Louis. After completing his education, he enlisted in the US Navy to help our country fight in WWII. He served aboard the USS Schenck, a naval Destroyer. After his return from service, he and his sweetheart, Frances E. Morrison were married in Centralia, Illinois. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage together until Frances' passing in 2004.
John became a mechanic for the US Postal Service, working in the central garage in Boston. In 1985, after over 30 years with the Post Office, John retired as a manager.
John was a member of the Tin Can Sailors, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He also had an interest in transportation, appreciating old rail trains and street cars. John and Frances were members of the Centre Methodist Church, now call the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. They enjoyed wintering in Florida together.
John is survived by his children, Marilyn D. Nelson and husband Carl of West Newbury, Roland S. Gustafsen and wife Pauline, Robert A. Nelson and wife Wanda of Columbia, MO, John Nelson and wife Charlotte of Manchester, NH, and his sister-in-law, Eleanor R. Harvey of Manchester, as well as 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife Frances, his parents, John and Tilda Nelson and his siblings, Stanley Nelson, Mildred Donoho, Agnes Burns, and Pearl Nelson.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 9:30-11:30 AM at Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, immediately followed by funeral services at the same location. Burial will be at the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
