Lech Sobieszek Obituary

Lech Sobieszek, 77, of Stoneham, a retired Machinist and a well-known former Polish Solidarity activist, passed away in his home on December 23rd 2022. Lech was born in Walbrzych, Poland in 1945, the son of Adam and Wanda Sobieszek. He was raised and educated in Poland. He was one of the founders of “Solidarność,” the first ever and the only legal Trade Union in Communist Poland and other Eastern Bloc countries. As the regime began prosecuting Solidarity activists in the following years, he remained deeply involved in the underground movement by, among others, manufacturing radio transmitters whilst living in hiding. He was arrested in the mid 1980s, imprisoned and expelled from Poland. Since 1987, he has lived in the United States. For his merits in helping topple the Communist Regime in Poland, he was granted the title of the Honorary Citizen of Gdansk (2000) and decorated with the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restutita (2015).

Lech is survived by his former wife Halina, their children Maciej, Ewa, and Marta, his sisters Urszula, Elzbieta and Anna, his grandchildren Monika and Dominik, as well as many other family members and friends. Lech was predeceased by his parents Adam and Wanda Sobieszek.
