Margaret L (Wilburn) Clarke, a retired nurse for the Middlesex Sheriffs Department, passed away at the Kaplan Family Hospice House on Sunday, at the age of 93. Margaret was born October 16, 1929, the daughter of Leadus and Estelle Wilburn. She was raised and educated in Gainesville GA, graduating from High School with the Class of 1947. Shortly after high school, she enlisted in the US Army, serving as a medic. She was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1954.
Margaret came to the Boston area, and worked for the Chelsea Naval Hospital for 20 years. She also worked as a social worker for somerville-cambridge elder services and was employed by the Middlesex Sheriffs Department as a nurse until she retired. Over the years she studied at Roxbury Community College, North Shore Community, Antioch and Cambridge College receiving her Masters Degree. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Edward A. Clarke. Margaret was a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, Daughters of Isis, St. Augustine and St. Martin Church, and the Black Social Workers Association.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Edward A. Clarke, her daughter Christina Anderson and husband Mark, Sister in laws Ruby Wilburn, Mildred Shelburne and husband Ronald, Ruthann Clarke, grandchildren Taryn, Tyrique, Justine, Kelly, Paul and Jocelyn. Great grandchildren Jordan, Craig, Sydney, Carrington, Simone and Gabriel. Several nieces and nephews, cousin Nell and Harry
She is preceded in death by her parents Leadus and Estelle, son Christopher Gibbs, brothers Winfred and Harold(June) Wilburn
Funeral services will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden on Tuesday, March 7th, with visitation from 3 – 6, and a funeral service beginning at 6.
Interment with Military Honors will be held privately for family members in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Wednesday.
