Melida Alvarez Obituary

Melida C. (Dillon) Alvarez, a longtime resident of Saugus, passed away on Saturday, December 23rd, in Revere.  Melida was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1943, the daughter of Luis and Olivia Dillon.  She was raised and educated in Ecuador.   After completing high school, she went to University and received her degree.   Melida emigrated to the United States in the late 60s, first living in New York before settling down in the Boston area.   She married her sweetheart, Samuel Alvarez, in 1971.  They lived in Malden for many years before moving to Saugus in 1998.  She and Samuel shared nearly 50 years of marriage until his passing in 2019. 

Although primarily a housewife and mother, Melida did work as a machinist in New York, and upon coming to the Boston area, she worked as a seamstress.  She enjoyed sewing and also did that in her spare time. In addition, she loved cooking, listening to music, gardening, knitting and  spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Carmen Cecilia Alvarez Freeman, Raquel Alvarez Segee, Melissa Alvarez, Celia Alvarez and Louis M. Alvarez, all of Saugus, her siblings, Gladys Dillon-Del Poso, Carmen Dillon-Del Poso, Maria Fernanda Dillon-Costello, and Xavier Dillon- Costello, all of Ecuador, her grandchildren, Melida, Celia, Melissa, Stefvon, Manny, Diego, Adriana, and Micheal, and her great grandchildren, Yannis, Zion, and Nasiah.

Melida was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Alvarez.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 29th, at 10 AM in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem ST, Malden.  Committal will be private.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 28th, from 4 – 8 PM.
