Mr. John Gordon Hodgson

John Gordon Hodgson, 86, a longtime resident of Melrose, who had lived in Epping NH for the last five years, died Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Exeter at Hampton Nursing Care Center in Exeter, New Hampshire. John was born in Malden in 1926, the son of John and Edith (Trites) Hodgson. He grew up in Malden and graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1945. Immediately after high school, he entered the US Army to help our countries fight in WWII. He served with the 706th Tank Battalion and saw action while liberating the Philippines from Japan, and was awared the Bronze Star for his actions. Before being discharged, he had earned the rank of Corporal. Upon his discharge, he returned to the Malden area. In 1951, he married his sweetheart, Phyllis Rouillard in St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Malden. The two first settled down in Malden before moving to Melrose in 1963. They later retired to Epping, NH in 2007. John and Phyllis shared nearly 60 years together until Phyllis passing a few years ago.

John worked independently as a carpenter and painter. Later in life, he became the Head of Maintenance for the Grover Manor Hospital in Revere. He retired in 1991. He really enjoyed woodworking and wood carving, and would make toys for the grandchildren. He also enjoyed restoring old furniture. After his retirement, he became involved with the Council on Aging, and was active with many senior programs. He was also a long time member of the VFW Post 639 of Malden.

He is survived by his children, Jack Hodgson of Nottinghham, NH, Beth J. Hodgson (of Epping, NH,, Juidith A. Johnson of Rochester, NH, David A. Hodgson of Warren, VT, and Scott E. Hodgson of Nottingham, NH, and his grandchildren, Brittany, Zachary, Cassie, North, and Katy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis (Rouillard) Hodgson, and his sister, Gwendolyn Martin

Visitation will be at Weir - MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Monday, August 13th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
