Paul Anthony Bartlett (88) of Lincoln, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29th, with his family by his side. Born in Revere, MA, to Ida and Elwood, Paul grew up playing football, baseball, and swimming, cultivating a love of sports that he carried with him his entire life. As a young father, he worked his way through Northeastern University and Boston University School of Law to achieve his goal of becoming an attorney, practicing law in Malden for more than 30 years, with another 30 in New Hampshire.
Paul’s ambition took him through many successful ventures in his life, owning and operating multiple commercial properties, co-founding a sports travel agency, working as a substitute teacher, and serving as a Malden city councilor, where he founded youth basketball and street hockey leagues in Linden Park. His vision became a model that spread to other parks throughout the city. Paul was also the commissioner of the Eastern Football League, and is listed in the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame as a “Pioneer,” an appropriate title for a man who blazed his own trail through life.
Paul carried many of these themes into the second half of his life and brought many of us along with him. We ran Falmouth Road Races with Paul, skied mountains all over the world with him, went on Patriots trips and attended Celtics games at the Garden, and hiked every major peak in New Hampshire. We didn’t just do these things with Paul — we did them because he led the charge. He’d stay up late with you for a drink and be the first one to flip the lights on at 7am to hit the slopes, never losing sight of what brought us there. He was the definition of dependable — solid, steady, always the one you could count on to set the pace.
Paul moved to New Hampshire with his wife, Karen, and youngest son, Brady, at the age of 58 and was far from finished. He’d catch the first lift and ski two hours before work in the winter, and play tennis with his friends every day before hitting the office in the summer. He played men’s softball well into his 70s and skied into his mid 80s. He continued to fill his life with trips and adventures, creating and sharing experiences that span generations of family and friends. What else can we expect from a man who ran 19 marathons and attended 19 Super Bowls?
Paul was predeceased by his daughter, Jeanne, his two sisters, Lorraine and Kathy, and his parents, Ida and Elwood. He is survived by his wife, Karen, and by his children, Brian, Lauren, Kenny, Beth, Daniel, and Brady. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who adored him and will carry his spirit forward in their own lives. Above all, Paul Bartlett was a person of remarkable character — a devoted husband, a loving father, a loyal friend – and he leaves a legacy we will never forget.
Visiting hours will be held on December 20th from 1-4pm at Weir Mac Cuish Family Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street in Malden, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the Loon Mountain Area Community Fund.
