Richard Stelmack, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away suddenly in his home on Tuesday, April 6th. Richard was born in Chelsea in 1953, the son of Edward and Josephine Stelmack. He was raised in Malden, and graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1971. After earning his CDL he worked in trucking, at one point owning his own business and later driving for Altas Van Lines and Mason Movers in Peabody, MA, until an injury forced his early retirement. At that time, he became a stay-at-home dad raising his two children during their early years, which he described as the toughest job he ever loved. Warm and outgoing, Richard could strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere, and loved to get people laughing with jokes or antics. He enjoyed playing cards and pool, working out at the gym, running, and doing handyman and yard work. He was known for his high degree of organization and planning in every area of his life.
In 2009, Richard married his sweetheart, Gabriella Snyder, and the two settled down in Malden together. They liked dancing and socializing, especially as a part of a group who dubbed themselves "The Connections." The couple also enjoyed vacations in the White Mountains, trips to destinations in the U.S., Canada, Italy and the Caribbean, and ticking off items on Richard's bucket list, such as white water rafting and Six Flags. Richard was a longtime active member of Club 24 in Malden, a sober social club, which he credited with saving his life. He was tenderhearted and always thinking of ways to help others, whether it was mowing a neighbor's lawn, shoveling their snow, giving a ride, buying a meal, or giving a pair of socks or a gift card.
He is survived by his wife Gabriella Snyder Stelmack, and his children, Adrianne Stelmack and Michael Stelmack of Stoneham.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother Edward. A memorial Service will be held at the Freedom Hill Community Church, 77 Kennedy Drive, Malden on Saturday, April 17th, at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Club 24, 787 Salem Street, Malden, MA 02148 or Bread of Life, 54 Eastern Ave, Malden, MA 02148.
